Matthew Amendt grew up outside Pittsburgh, trained as a theater artist at the acclaimed Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, and now calls Paris home while working across the US and in Europe. As an actor he’s shared the stage with a number of stars of stage and screen, playing many of the young leading man roles in Shakespeare including Hamlet twice, the full arc of Henry IV and V for nearly 200 performances, Troilus, Cassius, Aufidius, Claudio, Lorenzo, Demetrius, and many more.
As a writer, he was the first Dowling Fellow in residence at Annaghmakerrig, Ireland. His first play, The Comedian’s Tragedy was an Ivey Award winner for best emerging artist, and his work has been produced at the Tank and the Access Theater in New York.
Always looking to the Classical world for inspiration, his pieces have ranged from negotiations of our inheritance from the Greeks, through adaptations of Shakespeare, into contemporary storytelling that embraces the challenges of our technological world.
